LMC Roofing & Building Ltd was instructed by National Grid Electricity to undertake the complete refurbishment of the main substation roof at Hereford Grid 132kV.
The existing roofing system had reached the end of its serviceable life and required a full replacement to provide a durable, long-term waterproofing solution capable of withstanding the demanding conditions of a live electrical infrastructure environment.
Scope of Works
- Full strip-off of the existing roofing system.
- Careful removal of the existing concrete roof skylights.
- Over-boarding of all former skylight openings to create a continuous roof deck.
- Installation of a bespoke tapered insulation system to create new falls and eliminate ponding water.
- Installation of a high-performance vapour control layer.
- Installation of new rigid roof insulation.
- Installation of a 3mm sanded underlay, including all upstands and perimeter details.
- Installation of a charcoal mineral cap sheet to the complete roof area.
- Formation of all upstands and edge cappings.
- Installation of black GRP perimeter trims for a durable, low-maintenance finish.
- Build-up and formation of perimeter kerbs where required.
- Replacement of fascia boarding around the entire perimeter of the building.
Project Outcome
The completed roofing system provides a fully insulated, high-performance waterproof finish designed for long-term durability while significantly improving rainwater drainage through the newly formed tapered falls. The refurbishment has modernised the building’s appearance and delivered a robust roofing solution suitable for the operational requirements of a live 132kV National Grid substation.
Working within a live electrical environment required detailed planning, strict safety controls and close coordination with National Grid personnel to ensure the works were completed safely, efficiently and without disruption to the site’s operation.
